Community Hub
The Community Hub has a profound and far-reaching impact on both our school and the wider community, serving as a central point for connection, support, and opportunity. Through programs like Mums N Bubs and playgroup, families with young children are provided a welcoming space to build relationships, access early childhood development support, and network with other parents. Dance fitness classes offer a fun way to promote health and active lifestyles, while beginner English classes are crucial for helping non-English speaking community members build essential communication skills and confidence, facilitating their integration and engagement within the community.
Cooking lessons delivered in partnership with OzHarvest empower participants to prepare affordable and nutritious meals, improving household wellbeing and food security. The Hub further strengthens its impact by connecting individuals with a range of additional community partners, linking families to services and resources they may otherwise find difficult to access. Educational and employment opportunities are expanded through TAFE employment pathways courses, which helps participants gain skills and qualifications to improve their job prospects. Basic sewing classes not only encourage creativity but also foster self-efficacy and independence, especially for those wanting to contribute to their household or pursue new hobbies.
Being a part of a Hub gives families a sense of belonging and creates friendships and support networks. Mothers, fathers and carers also connect at their local Hub with volunteer, education and training pathways that can lead to employment. While Hubs are open to all families in the local area, many activities can be of particular benefit to families who may face extra challenges in linking with services, learning opportunities or the wider community.
The Hub actively recognises and celebrates cultural diversity through inclusive events, bringing people together across backgrounds and strengthening the sense of belonging and respect among all community members. Most importantly, the Hub serves as a supportive network, acting as a bridge between families and local support services, and offering guidance and assistance in times of need. The breadth and inclusivity of its programs mean that the Community Hub is accessed and appreciated by both school families and wider local residents, making it a cornerstone in supporting school engagement, community resilience, and improved social, educational, and health outcomes for everyone it serves.
We are very excited to introduce Ms. Sivananthini Suresan to the Bert Oldfield PS community as our Hub Leader. Please make sure you come and say hello to Nanthini and talk about ways you can both contribute to and receive support from the Hub.
